GV-SOLAS – For the Benefit of Humans and Animals

The Society of Laboratory Animal Science (GV-SOLAS) is a registered association dedicated to the responsible use of laboratory animals. It serves as a bridge between animal welfare and research for the benefit of both humans and animals. GV-SOLAS serves as a competent point of contact for legislators, scientists, and the public whenever expertise regarding laboratory animals and their welfare is required. GV-SOLAS also organizes scientific conferences and seminars. Current continuing education and training opportunities on various topics in laboratory animal science can be found in the Events section.

Goals and Tasks

  • Primary point of contact for legislators and the public on issues related to laboratory animal science and animal welfare

  • Formation of working committees to produce scientific information and publications containing recommendations

  • Training, continuing education, and professional development for individuals involved in animal experimentation

  • Certification of relevant courses

  • Awarding of the title “GV-SOLAS Certified Specialist in Laboratory Animal Science” (see “Committee of Certified Specialists”)

  • Organization of scientific conferences and continuing education events

  • Promotion of members’ scientific activities

  • Support for research projects in laboratory animal science (see “Research Funding” below)

  • Awarding of prizes for outstanding work in laboratory animal science

  • Membership and participation in national and international committees and associations (e.g., FELASA, ICLAS, VBIO)
